Burn a Bobcat

Please don’t buy any Bobcat miners. The maker has stopped operation.

As you may know, a worldwide historic heat wave has brought record-high temperatures. I know many of you are worring if high temperatures can cause your Bobcat to break. I decided to burn my Bobcat to test it.

Because I wanted to simulate a real situation, I measured the temperatures around my home to decide where I should test it. Below are the normal temp of California in summer.

Roof, 66.6°C = 151.88°F [(66.6°C × 9/5) + 32]

Tool used for test:

Floor, 66.9°C = 152.42°F
Artificial turf, 77.3°C = 171.14°F

1. Indoor test

First I put the Bobcat in a bag.

Unfortunatly, the temperature increased very slow.

68.8°C, 71.6°C

Then I tried to use a Portable Hot Water Bag to help increase the temperature. The max temperature of it is 158°F. It’s not very high but it can help me increase the temperature quickly.

Finally, the temperature increased to 86°C = 186.8°F
At this point I confirmed Bobcat Miner and Lora Packet Forwarder were working normally :+1.

2. Outdoor test

Then I moved the Bobcat to the Artificial turf, 78.9°C = 174°F, put the Bobcat in the bag to help increasing the temperature quickly. As you can see, the light was still green.

After several minutes, the temperature of the box increased to 168°F.
Then 177°F (bag).
Inner chip temperature.
When temp reached 182F, the light changed to yellow.
p2p status at this moment.
Bobcat inside temp. 89.6c.
Temperature kept increasing.
This was the max where I stopped outdoor test.

Blockchain works!

Miner, Packet Forwarder working normally and the blockchain blocks kept increasing. The temperature could still have risen but I stopped the testing because I think this is enough. The high temperature is obviously very bad to your Bobcat. The test lasted about 30 minutes, but according to the databook of Bobcat, they’ve tested it in a 60°C environment for 13 days.

Then I moved it back indoors.

Light was still yellow.
Then it turns green again!
Syncing, but it’s a Relayed status.

Since the computer was too hot and finally it crashed before getting all the evidence, I hadn’t a chance to get all of them. I’m not sure how the temperature will affect the syncing speed, CPU, memory and network yet. But the good thing is that Bobcat is very strong compared to my Laptop ^_^. I’ll do another round of testing in the future. Well, absolutely I’m not suggesting you to expose your Bobcat in heat but obviously you don’t need to put it in a fridge.

how did you get the blockchain log (Blockchain works !) and the other Log (LoRa works !) ?
